The phrase “engineer” conjures up and image of someone gleefully ploughing over the countryside map, ingenuity and technical ability, solving complex problems and finally coming up with a method that finally solves the problem at hand. This is the way many people experience engineering education.
The problem is that this image is far too idealized. From the very start the whole idea behind education is to deliver well studied, learnt information to present a well structured subject. This process leads to deep fears and criticisms by people who understand the real educational needs of children and teenagers. These criticisms are often voiced by people who are frustrated with the lack of availability of practical engineer courses.
What people often forget is that there are numerous ways to learn to warning and even if you only learn theory from books you should always interact with real life problems and be able to apply your knowledge. This is the best way to ensure that you will be able to apply your knowledge in bearable situations.
The fact is that there is rarely any need for people to get a degree in engineering. People will only get jobs in industries where a degree is required. Having a degree is a requirement but having practical knowledge and skills is just as valid and can land you a job regardless of your educational background.
Of course, people shouldn’t choose a career based on a degree alone. People should look at the whole picture and decide whether a degree is suitable for them. No degree can guarantee a successful career since there are a multitude of fields and jobs to be found throughout the world.
A degree in engineering provides you with the opportunity to know about engineering principles, electromagnetic systems, dynamics, optics, fluid mechanics, programming languages, how to design even simple things such as a clear purse, and computer applications. This is a wide ranging subjects and one can obtain a degree in many specified areas.
There are many engineering institutes that offer diverse courses in engineering. A list of such institutes can be found on the official website of each college. Therefore, there is no need to go anywhere just acquire a degree from a good institute.
When choosing a college for a degree in engineering there are certain things to consider. The first thing one needs to do is carry out a brief research of different engineering institutes and note the marks (or the percentage of students getting enrollments each year) of different colleges. Find out the faculty and instructor’s qualifications. One should also do a through research on the college and learn about the vision and mission of the college. What about the student’s experience? Are students having fun in their classes?
After defining the problem and solving it, one needs to know how to solve it. This is where the classmates’ input and ideas come in. The classmates can help by sharing their experiences and expertise. The problem-solving technique that is being taught by the college will not work if the students do not know how to apply it. One can ask a classmate for help, but it is best to seek theoretical inputs from other experts as well.
